long time no see
seeing this title
It means that you usually have difficulty controlling your thoughts.
you sit at the table
took out the exercise book
you remembered that there was a WeChat message that you didn't reply.
so you open WeChat and started to browse friends' posts
in the last video.
I introduced in detail
the logic behind this brain science
the prefrontal cortex in the brain, which is responsible for decision-making.
can only hold very few things
it's like a public toilet.
and the feeling of being out of control in life
often comes from
too many thoughts going to the toilet at the same time
This is called toilet brain science
I want to share in this video.
what kind of thoughts are more likely to occupy the prefrontal cortex
to help you start the first step in managing your brain
Let's make it short
because I want to go to the toilet
Data from the US National Science Foundation shows
in the minds of ordinary people
there are at least 12000 to 60000 thoughts a day.
But the average duration of each thought
is only 10 seconds
The so-called 'focusing'
is to let important thoughts stay
and unimportant ideas to withdraw.
in 1927,
Soviet scientist Bluma Zeigarnik discovered
there is one thing in particular that is not easy to forget and that is
things to be continued
Zeigarnik has a mentor
he noticed that in the restaurant
the waiter can remember the bilsl that have not been paid,
but can't remember the bills that have already been paid.
So Zeigarnik followed the vine
found that people
are incentivised to do things from beginning to end
this phenomenon was later known as the Zeigarnik effect.
AKA dish effect
because it also explains
the reason why we never forget our first love
it is also called the first love effect.
Using the Zeigarnik effect wisely
can help you enhance your memory
and create motivations
let me give you an example.
When you are studying
if you regularly force yourself to rest
then the knowledge that have not been learned
are more likely to stay in your mind
making it harder for you to forget
but what we're going to talk about today
it's the negative consequences of Zeigarnik effect.
You personally like to do things from beginning to end
butin modern society
most things have a beginning but no end.
these things are like unflushed toilets
each one will take up your brain
causing congestion
and since I was aware of the Zeigarnik effect
I found in life
there are three causes
I have marked them down
to share with everyone
first, WeChat
as well as online chat software represented by WeChat
because this kind of software
erase the beginning and end of a conversation
in face to face conversation
we usually start with 'Hi'
and end with 'Bye;
but online chatting is different.
We often need to look at emojis sent by others
and blue ticks
to guess whether the conservation is over
and between messages
there is this empty window period
which easily cause the Zeigarnik effect.
It seems like you're done with your message.
so you started reading books
But some of your brain cells
have been thinking
Did you reply?
Did you reply?
Did you reply?
There is also a situation
where you quarrel with others to half
the other suddenly stops replying
so you feel angry and nervous
accelerated heartbeat
your mind starts to become grumpy
but once a reply is received
no matter the other person's attitude is good or bad
your feel much better immediately
Then I guess you're not really bothered because of relationships
and feel annoyed
but rather because of the Zeiganick effect
the second cause
I call it 'over thinking about future'
the more one gives long-term meaning to the present.
The less likely it is to have a sense of completion.
For example, you are a toilet seller
Your goal today is to sell two toilets
successful sold out
it's great.
But this time your brain starts to worry
because you have to sell 2,000 toilets this year.
You have to get a promotion and a raise next year
you must buy a house, buy a car and travel abroad the following year
i'm certainly not saying that having long-term goals is a bad thing
but over-indulging in a story
is to use the Zeigarnik effect as a whip
forcing your brain to work 24 Hours
even if you finish all the tasks every day
you still feel uneasy
we always say people have to live in the moment
because the future.
has only one state.
That's the unfinished state.
Third cause
I 'd like to emphasise
the multitasking illusion mentioned in the previous video
why is it called illusion?
Because your brain
basically can't multitask
But the British journalist John Harry
writes in his book
young people now generally believe
they can follow 6 forms of media at the same time
you may think six is a bit too much.
But I bet you have a habit
that's when watching movie on the computer
you unconsciously at the same time take out the mobile phone to browse feeds
the essence of this behavior is
you are beeing over-confident
as a result, when you are doing task A
there are always a few brain cells left for task B
while doing task B
a few more brain cells left for task A
in addition to losing focus
you also need to switch between tasks frequently.
And every switch has a huge hidden cost
this is also known as the switching cost effect.
For example, when you build a toilet, you read a text message for 2 seconds
You lose not only 2 seconds
your brain needs to restart
all the thinking loops about making toilets.
This is very time-consuming
research have found that
various sources of interference in the office
would cause people to waste an average of
2.1 hours a day
On average, every 11 minutes
employees will be interrupted once
after being interrupted.
It takes 25 minutes to regain focus
the University of London also found
constantly disturbed by email or text messages
on average
lowers a person's IQ by 10 percentage points.
Equivalent to the effect of a night of insomnia
women are down 5 percentage points.
Men are down 15 percent.
for men
it's twice as bad as smoking marijuana
after talking about the Zeigarnik effect
Let's talk about the solution.
The first step here is to imagine your brain
yes, again, a blocked public toilet.
There's a long line outside this public toilet.
representing the ideas waiting to enter your brain
But now there's an extra toilet manager at the door.
This manager has a few tricks
the first is the two-minute rule.
The 2 minute rule says
anything that can be solved in 2 minutes
you should do it immediately
Let's say you get up in the morning and see a messy desk.
You think
gotta find a time
to organise it
don'! stop! stop!
don't find another time!
do it right now.
Finish quickly.
and forget it quickly
because the cost of this 2 minutes of action
is a lot smaller then
in the brain
the cost of having Zeigarnik effect
it's like
the toilet manager meet a guy who is going to take a shxt
and a guy who's going to pee
then let the first guy go in first.
Quickly finish
don't block the queue
But there is a premise
that's you must be able to finish the task in two minutes.
instead of doing it for a while without finishing
such as the aforementioned message-replying scenario
it takes 2 minutes to reply
But after 2 minutes there will be more 2 minutes
then you should do it later.
Avoid the previously mentioned switching cost effect
Toilet manager's second trick
is the reservation method.
I have formed a habit now
that's anything that comes to my mind
that can't be done in 2 minutes.
I sould note them down immediately
By doing this
you can generate tasks
and transfer them from the prefrontal cortex to paper
or to phone
releasing your brain capacity
it's like having a reservation book for the public toilet.
and tell the people at the back of the line
if you are not urgent, go shopping first.
wait until it's your turn
in order to be able to carry out the full power of this trick
I also recently made a shortcut command on my phone.
some chats that i don't want to reply immediately after seeing them.
I'll double-click on the back of my phone
select the corresponding person's name
this shortcut
will automatically make a note
to remind you to reply later
at the same time, it will write you a message to tell the other person
After I do it
I feel I have lost sanity
but if you want to go crazy like me
I hope you can give this video a like
Then go to my personal website to download for free.
The last trick of the administrator
is to reduce the number of people who go to the toilet
we mentioned earlier
in the minds of ordinary people
there 1.2-60000 ideas a day
even if 1% of it leaves you feeling unfinished.
That's 120-600 people who go to the toilet.
We 've racked our brains
to get more and more ideas into the toilet
but we never stopped asking
is this really what washroom want?
Our bathroom
shouldn't it be a fancy place?
if you want to make your lavatory
function properly as long as possible
you need to give it things to do every day.
Set priorities and caps
the manager must post an announcement
the toilet can only take 10 people a day.
or it will explode
in addition to reducing tasks
you also need to reduce the various sources of interference
because a lot of ideas
is generated after you see
all kinds of visual stumuli
for example, on Mac
Every time I look at so many windows.
I tend to procrasinate
this window wants me to buy something
that window wants me to watch video
the brain is subconsciously
influenced by various temptations
but use this option+command+h.
hiding the windows
my motivation is immediately back
so clean up your virtual space
clean up your reality space.
Congratulations
your toilet manager is ready for work
uh, the toilet is full
okay, so this is the end of the video.
Thanks for seeing
